He was one of the first officers of the US Navy and commanded numerous
ships (Ranger, Raleigh, Alliance, Alfred, etc.) during the American
Revolution as well as flotillas. He is best remembered for his defeat
of the HMS Serapis while captain of the BonHomme Richard (named for
Benj Franklin).
