Paul,

I read the book on Robert Carter after a discussion on this list about the
book. I found it readable and enlightening. It has much to say about
apologists for the slaveowners. I intend to write a children's story from
some event in the book, but I haven't decided on which one yet. The book has
some slave names in it, so I will probably focus on one/some of those named.

One of the early stories I did was a piece of fiction about a slaveowner who
reacted to an overseer who applied the whip by freeing the stricken slaves
and giving them the overseer jobs on his plantations. You can read the story
at: http://www.educationalsynthesis.org/books/History/Freedom.html

If any of the others you mentioned who freed their slaves, could be used to
lend reality and authenticity to this story, please tell me which and where
to find information on that person/s. BTW, I don't have easy access to a
library! I'm a retired teacher living in the boonies.

Anne
