The Library of Virginia is pleased to announce that Pippa Holloway will be with
us to discuss and sign _Sexuality, Politics, and Social Control in Virginia, 1920–
1945_, at noon on Thursday, June 28, 2007. Her book explores how the white
elite who dominated politics in the first half of the 20th century sought to
increase state control over African Americans and lower-class whites, whom
they saw as oversexed and lacking sexual self-restraint. In order to reaffirm
the existing political and social order, these politicians legalized eugenic
sterilization, increased state efforts to control venereal disease and
prostitution, cracked down on interracial marriage, and enacted statewide
movie censorship. The Library is located at 800 East Broad Street in
downtown Richmond and free parking is available under the building.

We hope to see you here,

Katie Gillespie
