Locus sigilli  "in place of the seal" Used on legal documents  where a a 
seal would have been placed; i.e., in a recorded instrument to indicate 
the seal on the original document

The S.G. on the tax list was an identifier. It referred to something 
that would identify your relative--i.e., sometimes this was a physical 
feature near where he lived.
