I inadvertently omitted an important comma from the title of Smith's book,
an omission that changes the meaning of the title. The correct title is
"Managing White Supremacy: Race, Politics, and Citizenship in Jim Crow
Virginia." I left out the comma after "Race,"; he did not refer to "race
politics."

I also might have mentioned that when Claude Swanson stated that the
suffrage question had been settled, he was speaking as the recent
beneficiary of the purging of Virginia's voter rolls.
