I recently saw a photo of Confederate re-enactors on the cover of the Civil War
Trust magazine, Hallowed Ground. Now Civil War soldiers on both sides tended to
be farm boys, used to working outside a lot, living in an age before beer in cans
and televised sports. They probably averaged about 5'9'' and about 150 pounds.
From the picture, the average re-enactor would probably have to fast for about six
weeks before they could really look like a Civil War soldier--something more
demanding than delaying the first shot at Sumter for a couple of hours.
