Slavery is a European word. Natives had no such word, nor concept of
slavery, especially in the European context. A person who was captured and
taken to a tribe, might hold lesser status, but they were not slaves for
life. Europeans taught in churches and institutions that slavery was
ordained by God. Natives had no such teaching, nor belief. In fact in the
early stages of slavery, it was the Natives who assisted slaves in escaping.
