Right off the top of my head, it almost sounds like he was a keeper of a
gaol ("the Pound") and that he was paid 2d. for every person he locked up
("turns the key upon"), but I could be way off base!
All my best,

Subject: question
A friend of mine came across this reference to a relative while doing family
history research. It says:
"In 1655 he was chosen to keep the Pound, and is to have 2d. for every head
he turns the key upon."
Any ideas about what this might mean?
Thanks-John Maass
