Curles Neck was named for the near-oxbow
effect of the James River which curls back on
itself several times. There was not a family
by that name there. I would also disagree
that the Game Preserve at Presque Isle is
part of the Curles Neck. While there are
certainly enormous numbers of Canada Geese
and ducks there, it has been used as a
hunting preserve for decades. Presque Isle is
downstream across the river from Shirley
Plantation.
The Randolph family had Curles Plantation
there. As one of the most politically
connected of the politically connected, there
was definitely a locale of that name.
