According to the "Statistical Abstract of the United States", for year
2001, page 10, the following information is provided for UNION forces
ONLY:
Total Serving 2,213,000
Battle Deaths 140,000
Other Deaths 224,000
Total Deaths 364,000 or about 16% of those serving.
Other Causalties 282,000
The only data for Southern forces is the footnote of ". . . estimates of
the number serving in the Confederate forces range from 600,000 to
1,500,000." The listed source of the data is the President's Commission
on Veterans Pensions. A review, however, of the U.S. Army Chief of
Military Web Site, (http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/inq.htm) provides more
exact numbers (above are slightly rounded down). But again, only for
Union Forces.
