<< am interested in any Virginia military presence in South Carolina in the
Revolutionary War. I am aware of:
Revolutionary War:
- Gen Danl Morgan coming out of retirement to lead continental troops at
Cowpens.
- Some Va regiments surrendering at Charleston in 1780 when Cornwallis took
the place. Does anybody know the designation of the regiments and how many
troops surrendered?
Civil War:
- No knowledge of any Virginia troops there.
- But a general question. Did Sherman take the city the same way Cornwallis
did by cutting it off from the rest of the mainland. i.e NOT by sea.

Some tidbits to chomp on.
1. Revolutionary War. During the battle of King's Mountain, some of the
"Overmountain men" were from Southwest Virginia, led by Colonel Preston.
Lots of documentation for it, if you need some, will come up with a
bibliography.
2. Civil War. Brigadier General Henry A. Wise's Brigade was stationed for
awhile (late 1863-mid-1864) at Charleston, SC and other points along the
coast down to northern Florida. The 59th VA and 26th VA Infantry saw some
action in Charleston during some Federal raiding there in late 1863. (WIse's
Brigade consisted at this time of the 26th, 34th, 46th and 59th VIrginia
Infantry regiments). I wrote the history of the 59th for the VIrginia
Regimental History Series.
Hope it helps.
Warm regards
