This note might be of interest.
Charles Yates, a merchant in Fredericksburg, was tasked with selling some slaves in 1774. On October 11, 1774, he wrote Captain John Duncan he had trouble selling slaves because of the scarcity of cash--even a blacksmith & shoemaker could not be sold. He suggested sending the slaves to Rhode Island for sale.
