I have seen the symbol before the amount many, many times in documents dating back well into the 17th century.

Subject: [VA-HIST] pound sterling symbol
Today, the pound sterling symbol is written preceding the number as is the US dollar. eg: $250.?
?
In older text the symbol is sometimes seen AFTER the value. Was this customary at some point in time then changed in modern times??
?
Or have some scribes written the symbol after the value to coincide with spoken usage.?
?
I'm not describing this situation very well because I suspect that the symbol itself will not transcend cyberspace in an unadulterated form.?
?
Thanks for any help from you VA Listers - Judith Bailey Gabor?
