Also, this "American" vs. "Virginian", may be in part to what we sometimes
call the "landed gentry" - The Lees, The Byrds, The Randolphs, The Braxtons,
The Jeffersons, et. al.
These families owned a ton of land here in Virginia. Or what I sometimes like
to call my Father's side of the family, The Uppity People!
Since they owned the land, they made a lot of the rules - a source of pride
for them.
Back the, Land equaled power, prestige, money and marriage.
