No so. I have known in connection with my years as a prosecutor that there
are certain persons who choose not to live in society, but prefer life in a
correctional institution. Let them out on probation and they commit another
crime to get back into the system with its three square meals a day and
predictable daily structure. It is dehumanizing for sure, but they are comfortable
with the routine that they know and understand versus life on the outside.
I suspect for some slaves, there was a similar mindset....better to be taken
care of my massa for a hard day's work in the field than have to face the
uncertainties of the cruel world.
Perhaps some of you in academia have some outside experience in such matters.
