And while we're on the subject of cotton, slavery etc. -- the abolitionists,
Quakers, progressives clustered around upstate New York, esp. around Seneca
Falls, refused to wear slave-picked cotton and fabrics made from it and started
their own mills-- this community included the organizers and signers of the
first womens rights meeting that resulted in the  Declaration of Sentiments in
1846-- we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men and women are
created equal.
