Could you be referring to "Hero's Engine," a steam-driven device invented
by the Greek named Hero? It looked like a globe with several L-shaped pipe
outlets through which steam escaped and turned the globe. Perhaps Jefferson
saw some models of this type of engine in France. Just a thought.
