Va-HIST subscribers:
On Thursday, Oct. 13, at 4 pm in the Dogwood Room, Slemp Student Center, UVa-Wise, Dr. Tom Costa of the UVA-Wise History Department, will host a panel discussion, “Old and New Histories of Virginia.” Joining him will be Brent Tarter, of the Library of Virginia (ret.), perhaps the leading authority on the History of Virginia, whose Virginians and Their Histories was published last year, and Warren Hofstra of Shenandoah University, co-editor of Virginia Reconsidered, a book of ground-breaking essays published in 2003.
Costa will lead off the discussion with a talk about Virginius Dabney’s 1971 book, Virginia, The New Dominion, the text required in Costa’s undergraduate Virginia History class at ODU. Then Hofstra and Tarter will talk about their efforts to correct Dabney’s old-fashioned and prejudiced analysis.
The discussion will be live in-person as well as on Zoom. For remote access, please use the link below.
This event is sponsored by the Center for Educational Excellence and Innovation, the Lecture Committee and the History Department.
