The article was assigned after a watch from Fincastle with the name of watchmaker Samuel C. Whitside appeared on Ebay and it was brought to the editor's attention. Any information on watchmakers in that time period and in this locality would be greatly appreciated.<

Although not necessarily containing Virginia-specific materials, one of the
world's largest libraries specializing in horological subjects is housed at
the headquarters of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors
in Columbia, Pennsylvania. You can visit their web site at
http://www.nawcc.org/Library/libframe.htm .

According to the text on that web page, "The National Watch and Clock Museum
Library and Research Center provides free research services to members of
the Association. Members inquiring about a watch or clock are asked to send
clear photographs of their watch or clock, its dial, its movement, and any
trademarks or words that appear on any of the above mentioned parts. It is
difficult to provide good information if we do not see pictures of what you
have! Research inquiries can deal with any aspect of horology, except values
of items. NAWCC staff is prohibited from appraising items or placing values
on them. Non-member requests for research must be mailed to the Library. No
e-mail requests for research from non-members will be accepted. Photographs
of the item to be researched must be sent with a check for $55.00 US funds
(payable to NAWCC, Inc) from non-members. This fee is our per item,
non-member research fee. Phone: (717) 684-8261, FAX: (717) 684-0878."
