For its 150th anniversary, the American Institute of Architects has
drawn up, evidently based on some poll they conducted, a list of
"America's 150 favorite works of American architecture". Monticello
ranked 27, and the State Capitol in Richmond was 50. Both were the
oldest on the list, and except for a couple in Texas, were the only
ones located in the south, as I recall.
