There's a civilized way to avoid the brambles, bugs, and biting
reptiles: Do your cemetery hopping starting in late October. By that
time of year, a good deal of the undergrowth is dead, so it's much
easier to navigate. If you go in the summer, you're likely to miss some
stones altogether in the mass of green.
By all means wear the boots, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt. The
cooler weather means such precautions won't roast you alive. Watch out
for groundhog holes, which can turn or even break an ankle. The chunky
rodents love to live in burrows in old cemeteries near farmland. If you
are far enough back in the boondocks and deer season has started, a
blaze orange hat also might be prudent.
As to avoiding the vampires and other poltergeists mentioned by Ray, I
prefer to confront them head-on, right around Halloween and election
day.
