Your version of the story sounds much more plausible than the laundered
version typically included in textbooks. The term "massacre" conjures up
images of large numbers of victims, and that was the purpose of so naming
it. But it did not reflect the reality of what happened any more than
referring to Nat Turner's misguided rebellion as "genocide" because he only
killed white folks. The real "genocide" was the institution of slavery
itself, in which slaves were worked to death and then replaced with more
unwilling bodies shipped from Africa.
