Possibly because she lived in Williamsburg, VA, as a child. Her father
operated a creamery located near what is today the Historic Area of Colonial
Williamsburg. The family home in Williamsburg apparently had an unusual
apperance, as it was built entirely of concrete blocks. Georgia O'Keefe
briefly
attended school at Chatham Institute/Hall in Chatham, VA. Around the time
she moved to New York City to attend art school, her family moved to
Charlottesville, VA. (See "Cows on the
Campus: Williamsburg in Bygone Days" by Parke Rouse, Jr.; 1973.)
