When we were young Daddy bought a butter churn and we churned butter. He
also bought a wooden butter mold with a shamrock design. The mold still has
the sour butter flavor in it after all of these years. BTW, the fresh milk
sat out for a day to sour a little before we churned it and after all of the
butter was strained out what was left was buttermilk- with real butter
flakes. We drank it too, and it was yummy.
I always hated spoonbread when I was little. Mama fixed it for breakfast
with salted "lake fish" or fish roe. Now I fix it as a comfort food. I live
in NC so I go to Richmond every summer for steamed crabs and soft shells,
always pick up a couple of cans of roe too. To my WV born husband's horro
all of my kids are "crab -heads". We crave them. No one does it better than
Virginia!
