Jon: Have you tried searching the old "Virginia Historical Index"
edited by E.G. Swem for these names? I've long turned to that Index to
find all sorts of fugitive mentions and citations in old genealogical
notices, queries, and notes otherwise buried too deep to find by other
searching.

As to boats, you know, with the rivers being the principal highway for
the tidewater region, it was probably pretty common for folks to have
have private boats. Public ferries -- particularly the maintenance of
them by the counties --are mentioned in Hening, vol. 1 (1642/3: Act LII
).

Good luck on the searching.
