Jefferson may have also seen the brick serpentine walls that William Byrd III built at his Richmond mansion Belvidere, where he lived with his first wife and later offered up as a prize in his lottery. As governor during the Revolution, I believe Jefferson's residence was near Belvidere. (I am thinking of the accounts of Arnold's invasion of Richmond in January 1781). The Dutch almost certainly introduced the design to England by 1600 where they are often called crinkle crankle walls. They are especially prevalent in East Anglia which had a great deal of Dutch influence in the building trades. Jefferson almost certainly learned of the concept of Sinusoidal walls though the English building and landscape manuals of the second half of the eighteenth century.
