Dear Alyson,

I recently reviewed "Women Medical Doctors in the United States before the Civll War: A Biographical Dictionary" by Edward C Atwater for the Coordinating Council for Women in History. There is only one doctor referenced in practice in Virginia* However, there are numerous references and a bibliography which could be helpful to you. And the book is a great reference.

Candace Gray
Alexandria, VA

Looking forward to the symposium.
* Orianna Russell Moon Andrews (1834-83) of Scottsville. p.219-221 of Atwater. She was a surgeon with her husband for the Confederacy.
