Brent mentions in a recent post the Loudoun County Emancipation
Association. An excellent history of that organization written by Elaine
Thompson entitled_In the Watchfires: The Loudoun County Emancipation
Association, 1890-1971_ can be obtained from the Friends of the Thomas
Balch Library in Leesburg, VA. (see their website). It was a remarkable
organization--it obtained its own festival grounds and had yearly
activities which featured black military parades (US. cavalry troops).
All during the heyday of the Lost Cause crusade--contrasting sets of
memory, indeed.
