Randy, here are a few titles that may help point you in the right direction
(caveat emptor--I can't vouch for their direct applicability!):

Dissertations:

Smith, James Larry. "Historical Geography of the Southern Charcoal Iron
Industry, 1800-1860." Ph.D. diss., The University of Tennessee, 1982.

Whittemore, Barry Thomas. "The Rural to Urban Shift in the Appalachian
South: Town Building and Town Persistence in Virginia's Blue Ridge,
1880-1920." D.A. diss., Carnegie-Mellon University, 1996.

Books:

Clarkson, Roy B. Tumult on the Mountains: Lumbering in West Virginia
1770-1920. Parsons, W. Va.: McClain Printing, 2002, 1964.

Gerrell, Pete. Old trees : the illustrated history of logging the virgin
timber in the Southeastern United States. Crawfordville, FL: SYP (Southern
Yellow Pine Pub.), 2000.

Walker, Laurence C. The southern forest: a chronicle. Austin: University of
Texas Press, 1991.

Wood, Virginia Steele. Live Oaking: Southern Timber for Tall Ships.
Annapolis, Md.: Naval Institute Press, 1995, 1981.

Article:

Gates, Paul Wallace. "Federal Land Policy in the South 1866-1888." The
Journal of Southern History Vol. 6 No. 3. (August 1940): 303-330.

Hope this contributes to the cause!

Subject: Logging History in Virginia

Is there a book, or perhaps a dissertation somewhere on logging in Virginia
in the 19th and 20th centuries? I am particularly interested in
statistics -- employment, $$$$, % of workforce, etc. for this northwest part
of the State---Clarke, Frederick, Warren Counties.
