Editorial/ Research Assistant (.75FTE). [Position #460]
The Thomas Jefferson Foundation, the non-profit that owns and operates Monticello, the historic home and estate of Thomas Jefferson, seeks an editorial/research assistant to join the staff of the Papers of Thomas Jefferson: Retirement Series. This benefitted position will support letterpress and electronic publication of Jefferson’s correspondence, with a work schedule of 30 hours/week. Responsibilities are varied and include: tracking down and copying research materials; answering a wide range of research questions; checking stages of editorial output, including galleys and page proofs; checking annotation; participating in textual verification of handwritten manuscripts; and other projects as assigned.
Qualifications: Requirements include knowledge of early nineteenth-century American history, ability to accurately read difficult handwritten historical texts, demonstrated resourcefulness in tracking down and synthesizing information in a wide range of institutions and historical sources, and familiarity with word processing and Internet search tools. A Master’s degree in history or a related field, or equivalent research experience is preferred. Position begins June 10, 2013.
