I too, am known as a Yankee, although I have lived in Virginia for some
forty years - all of my adult life. Southerners who meet me for the first
time usually remark that I have a Yankee accent, but my family who is
scattered across the country, insists I have a thick southern accent.
I have some friends, met online, who live in NYC, and have visited them, and
one of them has visited here. I have no closer friends than that one in NYC.
I ran into one New Yorker who insisted I was nothing since I was not in New
York, but she had a mental illness to explain that away. Otherwise, there is
a healthy curiousity about Virginia in New Yorkers, and my friend has found
his visits to Virginia well worth the effort.
One time my friend, who often came down to speak at the schools where I
worked since he was involved in the Learning Styles movement, brought two
graduate assistants with him. Our small house couldn't hold everyone, so the
two young women stayed at the farmhouse of a colleague, where they were
told, in no uncertain terms by the brain damaged daughter of their hostess
that "all Yankee women are tacky". There was, of course, nothing "tacky"
about either of the two young women.
What tickled my friend the most was that Virginia was fertile grouns for the
concept of Learning Styles and the use of the emerging technology in schools
whereas, it was next to impossible for him to make inroads into the
educational establishment in his home turf on the same issues.
And, as a final caveat, I will add that although I am subscribed to a
history list from NY, it is nowhere as chatty or as informative as our own
Virginia History List which has, over the years, provided me with lots of
information and support for my online efforts!
