If you insist on applying a substance to the headstones to read the
inscriptions, do the right thing and take water along to wash off the
substance when you're finished. Leaving the residue will only degrade
the stone's inscriptions further and obliterate them from future
wanderers being able to read them. Conservators do NOT recommend
applying such materials to headstones/markers/monuments.
