Dear Deborah,

The archives of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Richmond administered by the Vice Chancellor and Diocesan Archivist Edie Jeter is a rich source of information for twentieth Catholic history in Virginia. It is located in the chancery building at 7800 Carousel Lane in Henrico County just beyond the city line. The diocesan website provides more information. The published source I recommend is Father Gerald Fogarty's Commonwealth Catholicism published by the University of Notre Dame Press in 2001.

Best wishes for your research.

Subject: Religions in VA in 1900s

As a follow up to Paul Finkelman's post, can anyone easily point me to a
source showing what religions were represented in Central Virginia in the
late 1800s and early 1900s?

I am interested in understanding better what the phrase "without respect to
religion or sectarian distinctions" meant for institutions at the time.

Thank you,
