In my book, Notes And Documents of Free Persons of Color, there is a story of my ancestor, Mary Bowden. Her story depicts her life as an Indentured Servant to George Washingtons family in Westmoreland County Virginia. She ran away several times and did not venture far from the Plantation. The last time she ran away, she went to Essex County, and remained there four years. Mary's family were in the area, which may be why she did not venture too far.
