ARCHIVES RESEARCH COORDINATOR

The Archives Research Services Branch is seeking an Archives Research
Coordinator to assist the Branch Manager with program oversight and
direction in genealogical services.  The Coordinator provides leadership and
training for other staff in genealogical and reference services to state and
local government officials, genealogical organizations and groups,
specialized researchers and correspondents, and the general public and must
be able to interpret, evaluate and analyze complex research needs.  The
Coordinator applies considerable knowledge of genealogical and historical
research methodology, Virginia history and historiography, and of the
holdings of the archives to guide, direct, instruct, or provide information
necessary to answer inquiries and to make available the archival records of
the Commonwealth.  Serves as a member of a rotating Saturday reference
shift.

The successful candidate will have a Master's degree in US History, American
Studies, or Library Science with emphasis in archives administration and
genealogy or ACA certification and formal experience in an archival
institution and in conducting genealogical research.  Requires comprehensive
knowledge of genealogical methodology and practice, of Virginia or US
history and government, of historiography and historical research
techniques, of archival theory and practice, and of cartographic research
methodology; demonstrated ability to provide complex genealogical and other
reference services and to conduct historical and genealogical research in an
archival repository; to carry out work assignments independently; to speak
in public and to write effectively;  to plan and carry out projects and
prepare publications.  Demonstrated ability to coordinate and conduct
workshops and to work with the public on a sustained basis. Demonstrated
knowledge of and experience with automated access systems, on-line searching
tools, and general computer applications.   Considerable experience and
demonstrated leadership and management skills in progressively responsible
positions in an archives, manuscript repository, or special collections
department of a major research library is desirable. Certification as a
genealogical researcher or lecturer is highly desirable.   An equivalent
combination of education, training, and experience may substitute for
education.  Must pass a security background check.
