On Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at Union Train Station in Petersburg VA at
7 pm Jeff Abugel will give a talk on Edgar Allan Poe's Petersburg
Honeymoon.
May 16, 1836 Poe, who was 27 years old at the time, married his 13
year old cousin Virginia Clemm in Richmond near Capitol Square.
One of their honeymoon stops was at Hiram Haines' Coffee House on Bank
Street.
Coffee houses were the rage then, and Petersburg was a hotbed of
creative and cultural activity.
The event is free and open to the public, and the speaker, who owns
the property that was Hiram Haines' Coffee House, will present rare
photos and drawings as well as court records to illustrate his talk.
Jeff and his wife Beverly Rivers own Rivers' Edge Interiors that is
the site of Poe's honeymoon.
Their shop is directly across the street from the Siege Museum, one of
three excellent museums in the Petersburg system.
Come early and explore 1734 Blandford Church and the famous Tiffany
windows as well as where Hiram Haines and his wife are buried, see
historic 1823 Centre Hill Mansion, and tour the excellent displays at
the 1841 Exchange Building that houses the Siege Museum.
Bring a friend and dine at one of Petersburg's many fine restaurants.
Union Train Station is at 103 River Street in Petersburg and is worth
the trip to Petersburg itself.
