He was in the 25th Virginia Infantry Battalion.  There is an alphabetical
roster of all Confederate soldiers.  I checked his service record on
microfilm here at The Library of Virginia (it is a National Archives
publication), but it didn't note anything about him dying in battle at
Petersburg.  There is a page, however, that notes his birthplace (Caroline
County), age at enlistment, physical description, place of enlistment, etc.

Thanks for those suggestions.  I don't know his regiment or his home county.
The only record I have found is the note in the Claims Commission filing
that he served for the Confederacy and died at Petersburg.  Is their a
source of the rosters of all regiments from Virginia?
