I would recommend: W. Fitzhugh Brundage,_Lynching in the New South: Georgia and Virgnia, 1880-1930_ (a 1993 book) and J. Douglas Smith,_Managing White Supremacy: Race, Politics, and Citizenship in Jim Crow Virginia_ Lynching, by ex-legal groups, was not as prevalent in Virginia as in some other southern states.
