Conference: "The Valley Road of Virginia: History and Landscape,
1700-2000,"  June 4-5, 2004, Shenandoah University, Winchester,
Virginia.  From its inception as a route for Native American travel
before European contact to its present form as Interstate 81, the Valley
Road through the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia has proven to be one of
the most important avenues for travel, trade, migration, and commerce in
North America.  The distinctive cultural landscapes of the Valley are
the product of this road's influence in shaping social, economic, and
political history.  This conference explores the interconnections
between road and landscape through presentations, preservation
workshops, and tours.  Chaired by Warren Hofstra and Karl Raitz, the
conference includes James Bryant, John Heatwole, Kenneth Keller,
Geraldine Kiefer, Gabrielle Lanier, Ann McCleary, Michael McConnell, and
George Thompson.  Sponsored by the Community History Project of
Shenandoah University; The Knowledge Point: Shenandoah University's
