We found one such grave marker in an African American cemetery in Roanoke
County, Virginia. The grave marker was mid-20th century. The photo was
originally placed behind glass that was embedded into the handmade concrete
marker. The glass had since been broken and the photographic paper and its
image were ruined.

There is a cemetery in Pocahontas, Virginia where there are grave markers
that have photographs inserted into the marker itself and covered with what
appeared to be glass or glassine or perhaps mica. Most of the burials are
probably from the early 20th century. Most of the burials are of miners
from Eastern Europe- Poland, Russia, Hungary etc. Don't know if this helps
at all but it is the only time I have seen anything like that in Virginia.
