Wishful thinking! McClellan only carried two states, New Jersey and
Kentucky.  The problem in the election of 1864 was in selecting  Republican
candidate, all of whom had more radical platforms on emancipation and post
war expectations for the south than Lincoln did. Check out
http://elections.harpweek.com/4Overview/overview-1864-1.htm and other sites
that discuss the election. Once Lincoln was chosen for the Republicans,
McClellan lost any ground he had gained during the pre-convention
activities. The US was not going to just give up the victory to the South.
The support for emancipation and the end to slavery in the US had  taken hold.
