way too high; probably no more than 500,000 before 1776 and no more than 100,000
afterwards; but I will defer to the demographers out there. I know this
material is in the Macmillan Encyclopedia of World Slavery and the Joe Miller
(at UVA) and I edited, but I don't have it handy
