Good Idea!
Your mother is closer to correct about the air conditioning than Bill is at
thinking Yankees move here because of the local values (in spite of them?)
....
Actually, I greatly appreciate your daughter's attitude. She is right that
it is time to "get a life" and put the emotions to rest. Nothing beats the
clear thinking of youth! She is apparently being "properly educated" ....
There is no reason to put a chip on her shoulder to be knocked off my some
Yankee college professor.
Last year I taught fourth grade in summer school, including fourth grade
history, the history of Virginia, and was shocked to learn that although
the kids had learned about the Jim Crow laws, they had NOT been told that
these laws were in force only in southern states, and were NOT the law in
most of the country. Even with the little ones I usually work with
(Kindergarten to 2nd grade) I find myself correcting what the kids have
learned, to understand that some of the evils overturned with Civil and
Human Rights movements, existed only in the South.
There is a question that comes up with the little ones who haven't learned
yet what is and isn't a polite question. They want to know WHY? Why did
white folks make up those Jim Crow laws? What purpose did they serve other
than to demean some citizens?
