Daguerreotypes, which have mirror-like backgrounds, were close to passe by
the time of the Civil War. Most cased images from the Civil War era are
actually ambrotypes, which have green-gray backgrounds. The uncased, dark
images on metal are tintypes or ferrotypes. The paper images (made from
glass negatives) are usually described by their size (cabinet card, carte de
visite).
