Staples has as much proof as you do that Cocke was bad mouthing TJ over
religion. When you come across items you don't like, you call them
lies, but you seem perfectly willing make giant leaps without firm proff
when you want to defend TJ.

Subject: [VA-HIST] Brent Staples NYT "again" "bad mouthing" Thomas
Jefferson
I note that Brent Staples at NYT is at it again, stating that Thomas
Jefferson fathered slave children. He has NO proof of it and just seems
to go back to the earlier NYT articles when the media was believing the
Nature article. Why does he not go to the Scholar's Commission Report
(www.tjheritage.org) and read the truth about the study.....NO proof of
TJ fathering slave children? In my opinion, he needs to drag it out
again every time he writes a slavery or African American story.

For Brent Staples to presume the Hemings-TJ paternity is nothing new. He
mentions it at a rate of once per year or two or so. In my view, what he
wrote today about the Loving case, however, merits attention. It also
seems to me that what Jon Kukla contributed about General John Hartwell
Cocke may merit attention too, though I note that Cyndi Burton's book
also has some interesting things to say about that. What I, for one,
believe does not merit any bandwidth is a resumption of what Brent
Tarter recently called
"the annual shouting match about Thomas Jefferson and sex and race."
Thanks.
