Featuring Presentations by J. Mark Lowe
The Friends of the Virginia State Archives presents the annual Richard
Slatten Lecture as part of its annual meeting to be held on Saturday,
September 29, 2018, at the Library of Virginia, 800 East Broad Street,
Richmond, Virginia, with presentations by J. Mark Lowe, a full-time
professional genealogist, author, and lecturer who specializes in original
records and manuscripts throughout the South. He will deliver four
lectures drawing on his many years of research. Mark has spoken widely and
published articles in respected journals. He has been a consultant for
several genealogical television series including *African American Lives 2*,
*Who Do You Think You Are?*, and *UnXplained Events*. He formerly was
president of the Association of Professional Genealogists, president for
the Federation of Genealogical Societies, and president of the Southern
Kentucky Genealogical Society. Mark is a Certified Genealogist and a Fellow
of the Utah Genealogical Society.
“Whiskey, Brandy, and Southern Migration,” will help you understand why our
ancestors were searching for limestone-filtered flowing springs and
abundant fruit and grain in places where they settled. “Road Crews and Jury
Selection: Finding an Ancestor without a Census,” delves into court order
and minutes as sources. “My Ancestor, the Farmer: Shaping a Profile for
Your Rural Ancestor” will help you develop a rich profile of your farming
ancestor and community using available resources. “Finding Your Landless
Ancestors” provides clues in using trust deeds, chattel mortgages, and tax
release books to help locate those individuals without deeds and estates.
