For a colonial classic that sort of bridges your novel/personal memoir
categories, may I suggest William Byrd's Secret History?

For a couple of 20th century personal memoirs, I suggest Francis Pickens
Miller's Man from the Valley, and Donald McCaig's An American Homeplace
(which describes his life up near Monterey).
