Second Annual Governor Henry Lecture

"He Spoke as Homer Wrote": Patrick Henry and the Debate over the U. S.
Constitution

     Library of Virginia, April 8, 5:30 p.m.

The distinguished American historian and editor John P. Kaminski will
present the second annual Governor Henry Lecture at Charlotte Court
House and again at the Library of Virginia in Richmond in April 2002. A
leading authority on the history of the Constitution, Dr. Kaminski has
been associated with the monumental Documentary History of the
Ratification of the Constitution since 1969, serving as project director
since 1980.

Dr. Kaminski's presentation, "'He Spoke as Homer Wrote': Patrick Henry
and the Debate over the U. S. Constitution," is the second annual
Governor Henry Lecture sponsored by the Patrick Henry Memorial
Foundation and the Library of Virginia.

On Sunday afternoon, April 7, Dr. Kaminski will present his talk in the
historic courthouse of Charlotte County at 3 PM. The lecture is free and
open to the public, with refreshments afterwards at Arcadia.

On Monday, April 8, Dr. Kaminski will present his lecture, at 5:30 PM.
at the Library of Virginia, 800 East Broad Street, in Richmond. A
reception will follow the lecture. The event is free and open to the
public, with free underground parking for those attending the Governor
Henry Lecture.

With eighteen volumes published to date - including three comprehensive
volumes on Virginia - Dr. Kaminski's *Documentary History of the
Ratification of the Constitution* makes a vital contribution to American
history, political science, law, and statesmanship. An able speaker and
writer, Dr. Kaminski has carried his mastery of the subject into books
and articles and educational programs. In addition to the *Ratification*
volumes, Dr. Kaminki's published works include *The Constitution and the
States* (1988), *The Bill of Rights and the States* (1992), *A Necessary
Evil? Slavery and the Debate over the Constitution* (1995), and
*Federalists and Antifederalists* (1998).

Raised in Chicago, John P. Kaminski earned his B.A. and M.A. from
Illinois State University and his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin
in 1972. He joined the *Documentary History of the Ratification of the
Constitution* project as associate editor in 1969, became director in
1980, and founded the Center for the Study of the American Constitution
in 1981.

The Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation and the Library of Virginia
sponsor the annual Governor Henry Lectures, with additional support from
the Library of Virginia Foundation and an anonymous institutional
sponsor.
