I did run across this archives reference listing for the Jefferson County Museum in Charles Town, WV. In part it states:
Charles Town Collection.... C-01135 News article:
" The Martinsburg Journal, Thursday, July 16, 1942; ref: detailing Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's study of general Thomas J. Jackson's Shenandoah Valley Campaign tactics while Rommel stayed in Charles Town in 1936; tactics used by Rommel during the North Africa campaign. "
I wonder if there would be such a claim as early as 1942 saying he visited 6 years earlier especially since the war was still going on?

It's funny, when I first read your post I remembered reading something about his secret visit that was a first-hand account some time ago, in some book, for some reason. Don't ask me what it was now, because I can't remember. It may have been a book on Stonewall Jackson. I would not even have remembered that had you not posted your question. If I ever run across it, I will send it along here.
