The members of VA-HIST and the public at large is invited to the program "On
the Frontline of Integration: Memories of School Busing in Richmond," on
Thursday, September 27, 2001, 5:30-7:00 p.m., in the Lecture Hall of the
Library of Virginia. The Library is located at 800 East Broad Street and
free parking is available. The Library is hosting this program in
conjunction with the Valentine Richmond History Center, the Black History
Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia, and Special Collections at Virginia
Commonwealth University. The panel marks the 30th anniversary of mass
busing in Richmond, and will focus on the experiences of students, teachers,
and parents who directly experienced the advent of busing.

Panelists include former students Arnold and Rita Henderson, Harvey Hicks,
and Woody Holton; teachers Craig Cooley, Hortense Liberti, and Russell
Flammia; and parent and newspaperman Earle Dunford. Providing context for
the panelists' memories will be Dr. Robert Pratt, a native of Essex County,
Virginia, who authored The Color of Their Skin: Education and Race in
Richmond, Virginia, 1954-1989. A book signing by Dr. Pratt and a light
reception will follow the program. Copies of Dr. Pratt's book will be
available for purchase in the Library Shop.

Dr. Pratt will also deliver a lecture at noon the same day (Thursday,
September 27) at the Student Commons on the Academic Campus, Virginia
Commonwealth University, an event sponsored by the Office of Multi-Cultural
Student Affairs, VCU.

Sponsors for this event include WRIC Channel 8, The Richmond Free Press, and
First Market Bank.
